Veteran travel professional David Hosking is global managing director of Contiki Tours International Limited, one of The Travel Corporation’s brands that specializes in vacations for 18-35 year olds. Starting as a tour driver in 1976, Mr. Hosking held a number of positions throughout the many years working for Contiki Tours. Not long after he started, his potential was soon recognized by the company and he was promoted to a management position, responsible for the company’s overland tours from Europe to India along routes passing through many countries such as Jordan, Afghanistan, Parkistan,India,Nepal and others. Concurrent with this role, Mr. Hosking was also responsible for Contiki’s professional training in Europe. Political unrest in Afghanistan led to Contiki’s suspension of travel in this area and took Mr. Hosking back to his homeland, New Zealand, where he continued to work for Contiki, developing new tour routes there and in Australia, both destinations which proved to be popular with young travelers.

The next step up the corporate ladder took Mr David Hosking to the United States to head Contiki’s North American operations. After four years in the US, in 1987 Mr Hosking moved back to the UK and served as managing director of Contiki Europe, a position that he held when Contiki was acquired by Trafalgar Tours; it was during this time that The Travel Corporation was formed. Not long after, In 1991 Mr Hosking was appointed global managing director of Contiki, a position that he still holds today.

In 2000 David Hosking became a member of the board of The Travel Corporation. By this time, the umbrella company united some 25 brand names, from exclusive boutique hotels such as the Red Carnation chain, to safari trips with Wilderness Safaris to river cruising with Uniworld. As well as being a board member of TTC, Hosking also serves as the managing director of the Swiss based Travcorp S.A., with its staff of some fifty employees. Travcorp S.A. is responsible for managing many of TTC’s European operations.

Environmental awareness in the travel industry has been overlooked neither by Contiki nor David Hosking, who has been chairman of The Travel Corporation’s Conservation Foundation since 2007. The Foundation was established to promote the company’s conservation efforts and integrate these efforts into sustainable tourism. In May 2011 Contiki participated in a special event honouring Earth Month, and announced a partnership with leading environmentalist Celine Cousteau. The event worked to further educate both travellers and the Contiki team about environmental issues, with a particular emphasis on marine ecosystems. The funding for the Conservation Foundation comes entirely from donations from various members of the TTC group.

David Hosking, a resident of Nyon Switzerland, originally hails from Whangarei in New Zealand, where he was born in 1953. Mr. Hosking studied agriculture at Canterbury University and after graduating he moved to London where he started his career in the tourism industry. With a personal love of travel, history and other cultures, David Hosking selected a career most fitting his passion and interests. When not working, Mr. Hosking is a keen sportsman, enjoying all sports.
